Logistics as a core competence in online trading – How windeln.de organizes its warehouses
Munich / Bochum, September 15, 2015: windeln.de AG is one of the leading and fastest growing online retailers for baby products in Europe. Last year alone, sales doubled from 49 to 101 million euros. This year, the company went public.
As part of its growth strategy, windeln.de is investing in logistics and continuing to expand its infrastructure. In the course of this, the new warehouse management system (WMS) storelogix has now been introduced, with which the warehouses of the shopping club windelbar in Munich and Abensberg as well as the windeln.ch warehouse in Uster (Switzerland) are initially managed.
The dynamic growth is driven primarily by expansions into other European countries and the continuous further development of the portfolio. The logistical challenges that have to be overcome by the rapid changes and the permanent change are enormous. In order to be able to manage the warehouses perfectly, it was windeln.de important to introduce a uniform WMS. What was needed was a very flexible, quickly scalable and cost-transparent solution with which all processes can be automated and permanently optimized. The aim was also to be able to process a much higher volume efficiently and in less time.
Faster is better – optimizing processes is child's play with storelogix
With storelogix, windeln.de has opted for the system of the Bochum-based IT service provider common solutions. The big advantage of this solution is that it is implemented in just six weeks and is used as a flat rate – making the system extremely flexible because all future adjustments and optimizations are included and can be implemented immediately. Thus, the constant process optimization is no problem at all and even a new location can be put into operation quickly and easily. "In our self-managed warehouses, we wanted a system that would adapt to our strong growth and be flexibly scalable. In short: A system with which we are competitive and future-proof," says Alexander Brand, CEO and founder of windeln.de.
Storelogix successfully implemented in three warehouses since June 2015
Initially, storelogix was implemented in both warehouses for the shopping club diaperable and in the warehouse for the shop windeln.ch. The logistical requirements of both locations are very individual due to the different business models: The shopping club offers a changing assortment with significant discounts. New actions start daily and when they are finished, the items are ordered, stored and finally picked with all other order items. On average, there are about 130,000 pieces of goods as promotional goods at this location. The situation is different in Switzerland, where a total of around 66,000 pieces of goods are kept available continuously. From diapers to baby clothes to children's furniture, there is everything in the range. In both warehouses, the implementation of storelogix took six weeks each: In Munich, the system has been in operation since June, in Abensberg since July and in Switzerland since the beginning of August this year. windeln.de Operations Manager Markus Zabel is very satisfied with the quick and uncomplicated introduction of the new solution: "storelogix is very easy to handle thanks to its intuitive and user-friendly operation. We have already been able to optimize many processes and significantly increase the shipping volume with the same number of employees."
Logistics optimization as a basis for future growth
For the online retailer, this lays another important foundation for the future. Having logistics as a core competence in your own hands is a key success factor and means not only being able to harmonize processes, but also ensuring quality. Alexander Brand also emphasizes this and is pleased about the further cooperation with common solutions: "With storelogix, we can control and coordinate our logistics ourselves. This ensures quality, which increases customer satisfaction and also reduces our logistics costs enormously. We are delighted that we have found the right partner here for the future."
About storelogix
storelogix is the WMS of the Bochum-based IT service provider common solutions. The system is the perfect solution for e-commerce companies: It is implemented in just six weeks and is cost-transparent and very flexible due to the flat rate. All adjustments, new warehouses and locations are already included in the flat rate and can therefore be implemented quickly – without long lead times and extra costs. This allows companies to permanently and quickly adapt their system to new logistical requirements. Another advantage of storelogix is that, in addition to procedure and analysis, all implemented processes are TÜV-certified, so that companies offer directly certified processes without having to go through a complex audit themselves.
